Domains have been given the Google magic touch

magic-touch

Two days ago a new player well and truly entered the domain industry, off of the back of a successful test launch back in June open to select invitees only Google has now officially opened up their domain service to everyone. As you would expect with all things Google the website and user interface is clean, simple and a breeze to use, nothing fancy just smart intelligent use of the data and process’s.

But what is it you will actually be getting with Google Domains? Well for a start registration and re registration for most non premium .com domains starts at a reasonable and competitive $12 per year, and for some of the new TLD’s such as .coffee you will expect to see charges at around the $30 mark.

Once you have registered your domain with Google you will enjoy the services of the Google DNS Servers which quickly connect to your site and get it up and running, you will have free WHOIS registration and website forwarding and linking email alias’s to existing accounts. During the whole process Google is also offering free phone and email support.

Seamless integration with third party website builders like Square Space, Wix and Shopify will also be on offer, though charges for these services will be separate you will be able to peruse the templates on the Google Domains website to your hearts content.

Last but not least as expected but a neat nice to have and a key differentiator between this service and its competitors like Godaddy Google Domains will offer full support for site integration into blogger.com another venture owned by Google.

So all of the above sounds great but what does it actually mean, well competition is good and when a player like Google enters the marketplace it will most likely encourage some of the other Registrars to “up their game”, certainly expect to see a reduction in the re registration costs that people are being charged across the board especially for low value domains. Additionally with Google being such a big household name that is now selling over 30 of the new TLD’s we may see a notable pick up of their popularity with such a big name behind them.

One key area to watch for all those SEO fans out there is whether domains registered through Google perform better and establish a higher SERP quicker than non google domains.. Since Google have stated time and time again it is important to establish the history and source of a domain before buying as bad links can be so damaging to your domain’s ranking can we assume domains registered through Google will be assessed by the search engine giant at the point of registration? And on another random but somewhat connected thought – what has happened to PageRank???

For a full list of the new TLD’s Google has to go to list, and last but not least please don’t forget to check out the thousands of expired domains we have expired domains.

Spreadsheets and Expired Domains…. Whats the deal folks?

Spreadsheet_animationPerusing over recent visitor feedback it strikes me that one of the most frequent requests is the addition of the functionality to down load and export our list of expired domains. As I sit here and ponder these requests I must admit I am a little confused…. The central theme of our expired domains tool/search engine is the embedded ability to slice/dice and analyze the millions of domains that we have on the site iteself without the need of an excel spreadsheet. We have added many filters which can be used against multiple search options which we felt met all of our customers needs but still we frequently receive requests to export the data..

Ok so feedback please am I missing something?  Coming from an analytical and accounting background I LOVE spreadsheets, yes I am the geek who color codes my tiles and fonts, I can do v look ups in my sleep and yes I once even preferred to write letters in spreadsheets… But with all that said I think I have moved on and really am stuck on why there may be this requirement based on the functionality this site provides?

With all that said as I have said in the past customer feedback and comments  provides the roadmap for new additions and releases so please join the conversation and let me know what  I am missing, I am intrigued and eager to debate this subject!2015

On another note Happy New Year – I am excited to see what 2015 will bring to the world of all things domain, last year was a busy and exciting one for many insiders within the industry with the release of the new TLD’s, but the main takeaway really was that they failed to make a lasting impression on the general buying public. Though many of the extensions performed way below analysts expectations with my marketing hat on I still think we have to wait and see before we can judge their true overall success in the industry and I don’t even think we will have an accurate gauge in 2015, Rome was not built in a day and with these new TLD’s we are truly changing the mindset of the general population, this will be Marketing and adoption by osmosis and may take years to truly measure… So if 2015 is not going to be about the new TLD’s what can we expect for the year ahead?

In the meantime a great way to start the New year would be to pick up some cool expired/expiring domains so go check out our expired domains tool at www.expired-domains.co we have thousands of new domains added everyday.

Thankful for all things Domain..

Since it has almost been a year since I took my first leap into this massive and diverse industry I thought now would be a good time to take a look at what I have learnt and what I am thankful for all things domain. I entered this world without any prior knowledge about ththankful_smiley_facese real inside workings about buying, selling and even renting domains. Yup I had absolutely no clue what TLD stood for and I remember vividly the  first blog I read about talked about something called Doughnuts of all things…

From what I can gather 2014 has been a really monumental year for the domain industry and not just because our site has now over 22 million expired domains in our database and is continuing to grow, but due to the  unprecedented release of the new TLDs never before has so many new domain extensions been released into the MarketPlace over such a short period of time. Reaction across the domaining community has been mixed and the success rate of these domains has been erratic depending on specific TLD’s. But with over 100,000 .club registrations already one thing I think we can all be thankful for is that with the release of all the new TLD’s the domaining industry is more accessible to the general public than ever.

I am personally thankful to this crazy world of expired domains for enabling me to learn more about my passions, I quickly learnt the lifecycle of a domain is way more complicated than some of the big commercial Registrars like GoDaddy would have you believe, I have literally spent hours studying a domain through creation to dropping and then  back round again. I now know the difference between Registries and Registrars, I know what ICANN stands for and yes I even know what a DropCatch service is. So this all leads me to the to the first thing I am thankful for from the Domain Industry and that is KNOWLEDGE – I have learnt so much that I never knew and am continuing to learn everyday – thank you for resonating with my inner geek!

The second aspect of all things domain that I am thankful for is enabling me to grow my existing love for all things SEO, purchasing a good domain is really only the start, if you wish to use your domain to grow your business and online presence, there is so much that must be considered from an SEO perspective that is many times overlooked.. Do I have good backlinks or bad ones? Is the Penguin algorithm going to penalize or reward this domain? Shall I buy an EMD or shall I just stick to .com domains as I have heard your SERP will do better if you do? Is Google’s PR still relevant and why haven’t they updated it? Where and how do I access the Whois data for a domain I am looking to buy? All of these areas and so much more I have been able to read, blog and learn about and yes I am a geek.

Thirdly I am thankful for data! As a self professed bad accountant, I have always had a natural propensity to find myself and my career leaning towards the study of data and what it tells us. Our site www.expired-domains.co contains so much information from the 100,000 + domains that expire on a daily basis to the traffic we receive from Google, Bing, Twitter, Facebook from all over the world. I have learnt the technicalities of how data can be scalable, and searchable, how it can be available to the mobile community as well as the desktop user. To the data I glean from the emails and comments of our customers – I am thankful for all of it.

Last but not least I am thankful that this joint endeavour has enabled me to work with my husband, he has taught me more than he realizes, I have learnt to be more patient than I ever thought capable of but best of all we have created this together and it continues to grow – thank you expired domains!!
